To most observers, all karate seem to be the same, but in truth there is an enormous differances.
Traditional Shotokan Karate's main purpose is for self-defense. Other types of karate seem to be more interested in competition scoring.
In order to perform what Traditional karate demands, you must first understand the science involved in making the power that is necessary to fend off a dangerous opponent. There is going to be the use of terms like gravity, solidity, velocity, stability, and many others. If these concepts are not taught and trained, then the karate movements are nothing more than a dance. You must study this statement well before choosing a martial art school. Remember that your real opponent will be bigger and stronger than you and that you will need every ounce of your being in order to stop him or her. This is not the time to find out that what you have trained for so long does not work. On the other hand, the other types of karate are based on only one aspect of traditional karate, and this is the competition aspects. There isn't anything totally wrong with this concept except if you think that you are truly learning self-defense. This leads instructors to teach their students only how to try to score first. Based on the only aspect of competition that whomever hits first wins unfortunately excludes the realities of life. If the opponent of attacker in real life is stronger than you are, hitting first will not be sufficient. Power is always necessary to stop the forward progress of an attack. It has been vastly advertised that karate is a confidence builder. The most basic human need is to feel safe and or protected. If you are not sure that you know how to stop a real attack on your life, then how can you truly be confident. With this in mind, Shihan Jemmot began teaching a local martial arts class at La Sierra Park & Recreational Center in '86. But as the years passed and his classes grew, the need for a foundation school became apparent. So, in 1990 Shihan Jemmott opened the Dai-ichi Shotokan Karate Institute (D.S.K.I.) in Riverside, California. Becoming the regional headquarters for the International San-Ten Karate Association (I.S.K.A.) and the International headquarters for theInternational Traditional Karate Institute (I.T.K.I.)
